Guidance for Navigating Today’s Teachings

[6]Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” Matthew 16:6

While the world presents an abundance of spiritual information these days, not all teachings are equally helpful for our walk with Christ. As followers of Jesus, we must cultivate discernment to distinguish beneficial teachings from those that could potentially mislead or distract.

In this lesson, I aim to offer some practical guidance for discerning true from false based on the wisdom of God’s Word

Teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. In this particular instance, Jesus was warning his disciples to be cautious and on guard against the teachings and influence of the Pharisees and Sadducees. He used the metaphor of leaven, which refers to yeast, to symbolize their doctrines and beliefs. Just as a small amount of yeast can leaven a whole batch of dough, their teachings had the potential to permeate and corrupt the true understanding of God’s Word.

Jesus wanted his followers to discern and differentiate between the true teachings of God and the misleading teachings of the religious leaders of that time. By urging them to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, he emphasized the importance of staying true to God’s Word and not being swayed by false teachings.

As believers, we too should remain vigilant in discerning the truth and guarding our hearts and minds against any teachings or influences that may lead us astray from the path of righteousness.

Here are a few suggestions for how to discern between true and false teachings in today’s world:

  • Compare any teaching to Scripture. The Bible is our ultimate guide for truth. Does this new teaching line up with what is written in the Scriptures? Be wary of teachings that contradict or twist the clear meanings of Bible passages.
  • Consider the fruit. Jesus taught that we would know people by their fruits. Are those following a particular teaching becoming more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful? Or is the fruit more worldly – causing divisions, appealing to pride or sensuality? True teachings will produce good fruit.
  • Listen to your spirit. God has placed within each believer the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth. If a teaching makes you feel uneasy in your spirit, that is cause for concern. Pray and meditate on whether it aligns with God’s peace.
  • Beware of those exalting themselves. False teachers often want to draw attention to themselves and away from Christ. They promote their name or personality rather than humbly pointing to Jesus.
  • Community discernment. Discuss any questionable teachings with trusted Christian friends, prayer groups or your pastor. Wisdom is found in many counselors. Their perspective can help bring clarity if you are feeling unsure.

The key is constant study of Scripture, obedience to the Spirit, and submitting all teachings to examination before God and his people. With prayer and care, the truth will be revealed. By Noel Christopher of Biblical fasting retreat
